BIKING TRAILS: There are two bike trails in the La Crosse area 24 mile Great River State Trail and a 21½ mile La Crosse River State Trail

GRANDAD BLUFF: Drive East on Main St., follow the signs. This 540 ft. bluff offers a panoramic view of Beautiful La Crosse WI our Mississippi River Valley & 3 states.

GREAT RIVER ROAD: The Great River Road in Wisconsin goes from Prescott south through La Crosse to Prairie Du Chien, following the familiar green pilot's wheel along the way to Cassville, continuing on Hwy 133 thru Potosi, on to Dickeyville where connecting with US 151 to the Wisconsin/Illinois border.   Much of it is etched at the base of bluffs & adjacent to the river & is 1 of 7 suggested American Drives to take according to Readers Digest.

GREAT RIVER TRAIL: The La Crosse River Trail connects to the Great River State Trail in Onalaska and heads East following the La Crosse River to Sparta.

HERITAGE TOUR: Drive or walk this tour on your own. Pick up guide at the Swarthout Museum or the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, located in Riverside Park, Downtown La Crosse.

HISTORIC RIVERSIDE PARK, RIVER LEVEE AND RIVERWALK: Located a block from the Downtown Commercial Historic District is the beautiful Riverside Park where the 3 rivers meet, Downtown La Crosse.

HIXON FOREST: Off Hwy. 16 just north of La Crosse St. & Losey Blvd. Nature Center open Mon.-Fri. 11 to 4; Sat. & Sun. 1-4.

HIXON HOUSE: 429 N. 7th St., 782-1980. Tours June 1 through Labor Day, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. (last tour begins at 4:00 pm).  Right across the street from La Crosse city hall.  Group tours all year around with group rates available. On the National Register of Historic Places.

LA CRESCENT APPLE ORCHARD TOUR: Discover the history of La Crescent, Minnesota and it's apple industry, and drive the Apple Blossom scenic drive.  La Crescent is located right across the Mississippi River from Historic Downtown La Crosse.

LA CROSSE DOWNTOWN COMMERCIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT: One of the largest "Commercial Historic Districts" in Wisconsin. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places. 96 buildings contribute to the historic character of the district and all are located within a continuous 8 block area.

LOCK & DAM NO. 7: Just off I-90 and Hwys. 14-61. Navigation season, mid-March through mid-December.

MYRICK PARK ZOO: 2000 La Crosse St. No Charge. One of 25 parks in La Crosse with picnic areas, zoo, kiddy rides and nature trails. Be sure to visit Kids Coulee, a community built playscape for children of all abilities located in Myrick Park.

NORSKEDALEN: Located on La Crosse Co. Road PI, 2 miles north of Coon Valley or 3 miles south of Hwy. 33. Visitors center open year round. Gift shop.

ONALASKA AREA HISTORICAL MUSEUM: 741 Oak Avenue South (Onalaska Library).  Permanent exhibits and changing exhibits.

PUMP HOUSE REGIONAL CENTER FOR THE ARTS: 119 King St., 785-1434. Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.  Features exhibits of local artists and performances on many weekends.  In Historic Downtown La Crosse Wisconsin.

ST. ROSE CONVENT CHAPEL: 715 S. 9th St., La Crosse, Wisconsin 784-2288. Open year 'round. Tours 9-11 am & 1-3:30 pm. No Sunday tours until 1pm. No charge, donations accepted.

SWARTHOUT MUSEUM: 112 S. 9th St., LaCrosse, WI 782-1908. Continually changing exhibits.

WALKING TOUR OF LA CROSSE'S DOWNTOWN COMMERCIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT: Self-guided Historic Walking Tour.  Tour map includes historic descriptions of 20 buildings in the District which are considered the most historic, architecturally and/or culturally significant to the area.  Downtown La Crosse.

Area Information 

La Crosse, Wisconsin is an area often called "God's Country" due to its towering bluffs, the mighty Mississippi river and picturesque beauty.  In the heart of the city is Historic Downtown La Crosse which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.   For more information on Historic Downtown La Crosse visit the DMI website. 

Today, there are many unique specialty shops, numerous restaurants, a wide variety of entertainment, museums and professional businesses to accommodate or entertain any visitor or resident.

Visit Riverside Park which has become a fun destination for many visitors and residents.  This park was designed by the world famous architect John Nolen, who also designed Central Park in New York City.  Whether you're looking to enjoy a game of Frisbee in the open recreational area, explore the bike trail, or just relax and admire the river, there is sure to be something that appeals to you.  In the summer months various authentic Riverboats dock in the park and general boat traffic is also welcome.
